Off-Center Earth

RIP Hollywood beauty Arlene Dahl, 96. Born in Minneapolis, she was Miss Rheingold Beer 1946. Her film career spanned 1947-’99. Surprisingly, there are only 47 titles under her name at IMDb. I’d say her most significant credit is Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959). She didn’t like being typecast, perhaps that’s why she didn’t appear in more big or small screen productions. She was also a beauty columnist, and opened her own lingerie and cosmetics business. Married six times, mother of three, she is the mom of actor Lorenzo Lamas. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Well done, madam. Here she is with James Mason in Journey…:

Here’s an interesting though unsurprising headline from “Under attack: Space Force general says US satellites are attacked on daily basis.” And the sub-headline: “China and Russia regularly strike US satellites with lasers, radiofrequency jammers, and cyber attacks, Gen. David Thompson said.” Are we at war?

Dress rehearsal, NYP headline: “Jury sees video of Jussie Smollett in ‘dry run’ a day before alleged hate attack.” His lawyers spun it as an actual mugging. “If at first you don’t succeed, try-try again.”

Seems like there has to be a lot more to this than this headline suggests, from NYP: “New ‘sexual meditation’ apps bring listeners to climax, then sleep.”

Headline from “Trump Hails Suspension of CNN’s Chris Cuomo: ‘Fredo Is Gone’.” Unfortunately, someone will make him an offer he can’t refuse.

Dr. Oz has announced his candidacy to represent Pennsylvania in Congress. If only he could elevate that wretched body to his stature rather than being dragged down by its.

How ‘bout this headline from FN?: “4 injured after WWII bomb explodes in Munich.” It happened at a construction site. New digs are supposed to be scanned before any work is done. The finding of bombs is still a regular occurrence in Germany.

Better late than never, from FN: “Library book returned after 110 years in Idaho.” It’s the New Chronicles of Rebecca by Kate Douglas Wiggin, sequel to Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. At two cents per day, the fine would have been $803. Boise eliminated fees in 2019.

My thanks to the kind folks who donated and bought books on this crisp, beautiful late fall day. Here’s what sold: a detective novel in Russian, The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot: A New Look at Betrayer and Betrayed by Bart D. Ehrman; Nat Geo pictorials for kids on maps and science; two other kids books, including a beauty on Genesis; The Faithful Christian: An Anthology of Billy Graham by William Griffin & Ruth Graham Dienert; and the impressive History Year by Year: The History of the World, from the Stone Age to the Digital Age by DK.
